It makes sense for Epic to continue bringing this level of creativity to Fortnite in the future, and this supposed RPG mode could function as the ideal outlet for that experimentation. With all its new features Battle Royale is starting to feel a bit cumbersome. Instead, players are too busy accepting side quests and farming wildlife to consider the allure of the Victory Royale. Weapons should always be found as floor loot so that supplies are easier to locate and the shooting part of the Battle Royale match can happen faster. The original Fortnite crowd doesn’t want to craft the game’s best guns in pieces. While recently introduced mechanics like NPCs, purchasable Exotics, and crafting are well-intentioned wrinkles designed to spice up the static competitive experience, having all these systems layered on top of a framework that was originally billed as a simplified combat experience doesn’t feel very good.Įspecially if you first hopped on the Battle Bus back in 2017, Fortnite feels like a completely different game that almost disincentivizes PvP in favor of interesting gimmicks. Battle Royale is bloatedĪs popular as Fortnite Battle Royale continues to be, there’s no denying its core gameplay concepts have evolved into something that feels more bloated and complex than is necessary. That being said, for current and future fans of Fortnite, this expansion beyond Battle Royale is ultimately a good thing. Between the fantastical beasts and presumed inclusion of magical items, there’s a lot here that doesn’t mesh with Battle Royale as we know it.
In short, there are lots of indicators to suggest this supposed Saturn LTM could be some kind of sandbox RPG. These two combined images offer what could be a first look at a Fortnite RPG mode. Behind the squad is a hail of arrows and a massive gorilla-like foe. In the screenshot, we see Peely wielding a magical staff, Jonesy clutching a sword, Fishstick holding a spear, and Cuddle Team Leader aiming their bow. While that chatter happened a few months back, the discussion resumed earlier this week when HYPEX posted two data-mined images of something that appears to be tied to the mode. This concept was further elaborated in court documents suggesting “Epic will go beyond Battle Royale and give us an open-world simulation sandbox.” The earliest indications of a Fortnite RPG mode surfaced at the end of April 2021 when HYPEX shared pictures of a large game map called “Sandbox,” which featured larger trees than normal and could generate random objects with a seed. Teasers for an upcoming LTM codenamed “Saturn” made their way to the internet earlier this week, and, when corroborated with documents revealed in the recent Epic Games v. The battle pass might reflect this, too: it looks like we'll see some variations on old skins, not unlike the recent introduction of Summer Drift.The Fortnite metaverse is aflutter following a recent leak surfaced by data-miners like HYPEX and others. After that, we'll come back to either a brand-new map or at least whatever we're working with going forward, and that's either going to happen right at the end of the season or with a few weeks to go. My prediction is essentially the same as it was on day one: we're going to fast-forward through all the map changes in the game since Season 3, or maybe as far back as Season 1.
And now, it would seem, we're looping back to the beginning.
It seems that we're treating this as sort of the unofficial start to the "plot" of Fortnite: before that, Epic was mostly just giving the game shape, but the meteor strike is when the developer started pioneering the idea of using map changes to weave a bizarre, looping narrative. We visit the Fortnite map moments before the meteor strike, with a great ball of fire bearing down on those three lonely warehouses, ready to transform things forever. It takes us all the way back to Season 3 and Dusty Depot, which was featured in the first teaser from the Fortnite World Cup. We also see some of what look like the skins from the teasers. We see Jonesy-who has become a sort of mascot for the game, I suppose-propelled back in time through images of Fortnite past, like the gold-tier Tactical SMG, Skull Trooper, the butterfly, Kevin, and even his old friend Peely, who doesn't seem all that happy about having been turned into a smoothie sometime in between Seasons 8 and 9.
